    Step 3: Verify Your Identity

CRA requires you to confirm your identity using one of two methods:

    1. Document Verification Service – You take a real-time photo of yourself and your government ID (e.g., driver’s licence) using your phone or computer camera. This allows you to activate your account right away.
    2. CRA Security Code by Mail – CRA mails a one-time code to your address on file. It typically arrives in 5–10 business days, and you must enter it online to finish activating your account.

If you’re unable to use the document verification service or haven’t received your code, you can request an alternate format or contact CRA for help.

Step 4: Create Your Login & Security Info

If you chose to register with a CRA User ID and password:

      • Create a unique User ID (8–16 characters) and password (8–64 characters).
      • Select 5 security questions for extra protection.
Step 5: Enroll in multi-factor authentication (MFA)

To enhance security, CRA requires you to set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). This means you’ll need to enter a one-time passcode (OTP) each time you sign in, in addition to your regular password. You can choose one of three options to receive your OTP:
